Zynga Zynga Players Raise Over $1.5 Million for Haiti in Five Days

Posted by Zynga in Press Releases

    Jan 20, 2010 5:38:38 PM

SAN FRANCISCO – Jan. 20, 2010 – In five days, more than 300,000 Zynga game players purchased $1.5 million in virtual social goods to support relief efforts in Haiti. Through Zynga’s top four games, users from 47 countries donated to U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) by buying limited edition items in FarmVille, FishVille, Mafia Wars and Zynga Poker.  FarmVille users alone raised $1 million.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from virtual social goods that Zynga users purchased went to WFP, which has an emergency response team distributing food and other relief to millions affected by the earthquake. These virtual items included white corn in FarmVille, a Haitian drum in Mafia Wars, a Haiti fish in FishVille, and a chip package in Zynga Poker. In addition, links for donations were promoted through Zynga’s other games, including Café World, PetVille, YoVille.com, and the Zynga.org site.  With today’s announcement, Zynga users will have raised $2.7 million for Haiti, having donated $1.2 million for the welfare of children and women late last year.

“We are extremely grateful to Zynga for this contribution,” said Nancy Roman, WFP’s director of communications. “Through their donations, Zynga players are helping us to bring urgently needed food assistance to people who have been plunged into hunger by this devastating earthquake. We started distributing food within 24 hours of the earthquake, and in the coming weeks, we aim to deliver weekly rations to 2 million people.”

“We are humbled by the response from our users and the speed with which they rallied from everywhere to help so many in Haiti,” said Zynga CEO Mark Pincus.

Zynga Zynga Creates Haiti Relief Fund

Posted by Zynga in Press Releases

    Jan 14, 2010 4:31:32 PM

SAN FRANCISCO – Jan. 14, 2010 – Starting tonight, Zynga (www.zynga.com) will run a special relief campaign in three of its top games that reach over 40 million users daily. Users can purchase limited edition social goods in FarmVille, Mafia Wars and Zynga Poker, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go towards supporting emergency aid in Haiti. All contributions to the Haiti Relief Fund will benefit the World Food Programme (WFP) which has set up an emergency response team to distribute food and other relief to thousands in Haiti affected by the devastating earthquake.

Zynga’s users have already raised $1.2 million for Haiti through purchasing virtual social goods. The funds have provided school lunches to Haitian children and contributed to a revolving loan campaign for Haitian women living in extreme poverty.

In the new campaign, users can purchase white corn within FarmVille that will not wither if left unattended for a week or a Haitian drum in Mafia Wars. Zynga Poker fans that buy a special chip package will receive a rare premium item. Additionally, users can donate directly to the WFP through Zynga.org.

“The devastation in Haiti is unimaginable, and anything we or our users can do is tiny compared to the utter loss for this nation,” said Mark Pincus, Zynga’s CEO.

Holiday Virtual Goods to Benefit Organizations in Haiti

SAN FRANCISCO – Dec. 22, 2009 – Zynga (www.zynga.com), the largest social game provider, today announced that several of its top games will run holiday campaigns to raise money for two nonprofits in Haiti - FATEM and Fonkoze.  Zynga will donate 50 percent of the proceeds from social virtual goods within its online games that run on Facebook and other platforms.

The program expands on the company’s successful “Sweet Seeds” program within FarmVille that recently raised more than $800,000 for the benefit of children in Haiti.  This holiday season, Mafia Wars fans can purchase a special Haitian drum that will help feed families and build school kitchens in Haiti through FATEM.  Zynga Poker players who load up on a premium chip package will support women and children living in poverty in Haiti through Fonkoze, the largest micro-finance institution in the country.  Gamers who play YoVille, Roller Coaster Kingdom and FishVille will also discover exclusive and festive ways to bring holiday cheer to their games, including the purchase of glitter globes and special food platters, while also contributing to improve the quality of life of those living in poverty.

“The concept of social virtual goods is in its infancy, and we are very excited to present our gamers with opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives,” said Mark Pincus, Zynga’s founder and CEO.  “Being able to connect and empower players to affect change in Haiti and elsewhere is just the beginning of how social gaming can do good in the world and provide meaningful connections.”

FarmVille’s “Sweet Seeds” campaign supports a program that provides school lunches to hundreds of Haitian school children at their school facility itself, giving them the nourishment they need during the school day instead of having nothing to eat until they get home late in the evening, if even then.  These warm meals approved by the United Nations are cooked in school kitchens that have been built with proceeds from the FarmVille program.  The program also contributes to a revolving loan campaign for Haitian women living in extreme poverty to support their families.  It includes services such as access to livestock for generating income, water filters for clean drinking water, and free health care management for women and their families.

DST comprises the majority of the new investment, followed by Andreessen Horowitz and Tiger Global as new investors in Zynga, and Institutional Ventures Partners, a current investor who has added to its position in the company.  Zynga’s other major investors include Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Union Square Ventures, Foundry Group and Avalon Ventures.  As a passive investor, DST will not hold a seat or have observer rights on Zynga’s board of directors.

Company Launches FarmVille.com One Million Users Purchase Virtual Goods Monthly

SAN FRANCISCO – Nov. 23, 2009 – Zynga (www.zynga.com), the largest developer of social games, today announced that more than 100 million unique users play its games every month, making it the largest online game destination. The company has 200 million monthly active users across all games, with one million users purchasing virtual goods per month. Zynga's newest games, Café World and FishVille, have contributed to the company's growth. Café World, launched in September, has surpassed 9 million daily active users, while FishVille has crossed 6 million daily active users since its launch earlier this month. Zynga's popular game FarmVille is the largest social game with over 65 million virtual farmers, 26 million of which play the game every day. These farmers recently contributed more than $700,000 for the welfare of children in Haiti. The company also launched FarmVille.com a new web site that uses Facebook Connect integration to bring the popular game to a standalone portal. FarmVille players add to their farms by gaining game points and purchasing virtual goods. Every month, more than one million users purchase virtual goods in Zynga's games, from tractors and pets to café decorations and lobster tanks. Direct user purchases account for approximately 90 percent of Zynga's revenues. "Our games continue to delight and connect players as they immerse themselves in their worlds of farming, fishing or running a restaurant," said Mark Pincus, CEO and founder of Zynga. "With the popularity of virtual goods today, we are in the early stages of a new economy that could grow and shape the future of the Web."

Popular FarmVille Game Raises $487,500 For Children in Haiti

SAN FRANCISCO – Oct. 20, 2009 – Zynga (www.zynga.com), the largest developer of social games, today announced that its FarmVille users have contributed $487,500 towards the welfare of children in Haiti. The “Sweet Seeds for Haiti” program, which has been running for the last three weeks, is an early step in Zynga’s efforts to promote “social goods” where Zynga players purchase virtual items as part of their game play while benefiting the greater global community. With more than 56 million monthly users, FarmVille is the largest online game. Players tend to their farm plots by harvesting crops from strawberries to eggplants, purchasing items like tractors and combines, and engaging with their neighbors. Under the “Sweet Seeds” initiative, users purchase special sweet potato seeds, of which 50 percent of the proceeds are donated to two non-profit organizations in Haiti that support the health and education of children and their families – FATEM.org and FONKOZE.org. This social goods program builds on an earlier Zynga initiative where players of its YoVille game, a virtual town with 140 million inhabitants, raised donations for the San Francisco SPCA by purchasing bulldogs and tabby cats from the in-game shelter as pets. “The sheer scope and reach of social gaming to affect people’s lives in a positive way wasn’t even a reality a few years ago,” said Mark Pincus, founder and CEO of Zynga. “Today, with ‘social goods,’ we are enabling players to unlock their power to change the world and impact the lives of children. ‘Sweet Seeds for Haiti’ is an early step for Zynga with more to come.” “Zynga has taken ‘networking’ to a whole new level, connecting tens of millions of people to some of the most isolated people in our hemisphere, the women and families of rural Haiti,” said Leigh Carter, executive director, Fonkoze USA. “Thanks to Zynga’s new social strategy, not only can we connect, we can act to eliminate extreme poverty in Haiti.” “At FATEM, Zynga’s contribution will help make local residents of the town of Mirebalais become self-sufficient by providing one of the most important tools against poverty: education,” said Jacky Poteau, president, FATEM. “Zynga has made it possible for over 500 children to have full access to quality education, and uplift them and their families from poverty.” Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the 7th poorest in the world. Zynga's mission of connecting the world through games is enhanced by the opportunity to support Haiti’s children and their families. For additional information on the recipient organizations, please see www.FATEM.org and www.FONKOZE.org. To contribute, go to www.facebook.com/farmville and play! Hits 129 Million Monthly Players

SAN FRANCISCO – Sept. 30, 2009 – Zynga (www.zynga.com), the largest developer of social games, today announced that it has more than quadrupled its monthly users over the last six months, making it one of the fastest growing applications on the Internet. In April 2009, Zynga had 30 million monthly active users playing its games, and since then the number has grown to 129 million. Everyday, approximately 34 million users worldwide play Zynga games according to Developer Analytics (www.developeranalytics.com) Zynga estimates its current monthly unique visitors are at 70 million. Today, Zynga has four of the top 10 games on Facebook: • FarmVille – the largest game on Facebook lets players channel their inner farmer by enabling them to grow crops, build farms and interact with fellow farmers. FarmVille has grown to more than 50 million users since its launch three months ago, making it larger than the population of Canada and the fastest growing social game on the Internet. Users have built over 40 million farms, more than 20 times the number of actual farms in the United States, and on an average day, players purchase 500,000 tractors to till their land. • Mafia Wars – the second largest game on Facebook and a Zynga classic lets players become the boss of their own crime family. More than 25 million users play per month and on an average day undertake more than 140 million “jobs.” • Zynga Poker (formerly Texas Hold’Em) – the number one poker game on Facebook is the place for high rollers and amateurs alike to indulge in poker. An average day finds Zynga dealing about 150 million hands compared to 11 million hands dealt in Las Vegas. On any day and at any time, Zynga Poker hosts 250,000 concurrent players, making it the world’s largest live casual casino and seating more than 3.5 times the audience of the average NFL stadium. • YoVille – the largest virtual world in social games is the place where users decorate their own apartments, complete with furniture and animals. Today, YoVille has over 17 million residents, a community larger than Mumbai (the most densely populated city in the world), that engage in building their own habitat and hanging out with friends. Since August, residents have purchased approximately 10,000 pets and consumed about 400,000 funnel cakes. “The rise in social gaming reflects the immense popularity of Facebook and the need for people to connect, play and express themselves with others,” said Mark Pincus, founder and CEO of Zynga. “While it is still early in social gaming, the success of our games with the user community underscores the sheer size and potential of this new movement which will finally let fun become the biggest way people interact.”
