I'm really excited to let everyone know about Mafia Wars' latest and greatest expansion to Bangkok! Just launched, this new city destination is the first major expansion that is accessible to early players, yet definitely challenging enough for high level players. I think our very own Mafia Wars team member Mike Humphrey summed this one up best below.
And here's a write-up from Games.com that you should check out: http://blog.games.com/2010/01/28/mafia-wars-bangkok-everything-you-need-to-know/
"Sawatdee! The
latest expansion city for Mafia Wars will grant players the opportunity to
expand their criminal empire into the heart of Southeast Asia - the capital
city of Thailand, Bangkok! Upon their arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport, aspiring
crime bosses will need to immediately establish a presence in the city. Their
efforts will not go unnoticed, however. The Japanese Yakuza and Chinese Triad
criminal organizations already have substantial interests in the region, so
establishing a good relationship with one or the other will be key to success
in Bangkok.
Mafia Wars:
Bangkok introduces a brand new faction system, where completing certain jobs
and defeating players who have aligned with the opposite faction will allow the
player to earn reputation with the criminal enterprise they have chosen to side
with. Increased reputation will unlock one of two final episodes, located in
Hong Kong or Tokyo, depending on their reputation with each faction. However,
betrayal is always an option for players. If they grow tired of helping one
faction, they can complete certain jobs for the other side and attack and
defeat members of their own faction. Doing so will improve their standing with
their new friends while slowly decreasing reputation with their old allies.
Additionally,
we are including a brand new faction store where players can purchase a
selection of special armor, weapons, vehicles, and even a unique business that
produces boosts. New items for purchase will become unlocked as the player
improves their reputation with their chosen faction. Each of the factions in
Bangkok has adopted a different strategy:
- The Yakuza
believe that the best defense is a good offense, and offer aggressive
players a selection of items to enhance their attack power.
- The Triads
prefer caution, forcing their enemies to fight where the Triads are
strongest; they offer defensive players new items to improve their ability
to fend off attacks.
We also plan
to introduce additional items to the faction store in the coming months to
ensure that supporting a faction remains an important element of play in the
expansion.
Mafia Wars: Bangkok will be accessible to players of a lower level than
previous expansions. Players level 18 and above who have discovered the items
to unlock the expansion - the Yakuza Sake, Triad Coin, Thai Note - can obtain
their Passport and travel to the new city. In order to create a system that
remains challenging to higher level players, but still allows lower level
players to progress, we have discounted energy costs, and reduced experience
payouts as appropriate, on a sliding scale for players between levels 18 and
200. This means that lower level players can still progress through the new
jobs, although not quite as quickly as more experienced players. Above level
200, energy costs and experience payouts for completing jobs will remain fixed.
Finally, Mafia Wars: Bangkok will include much more of what our players enjoy:
4 episodes packed with dozens of jobs including 4 faction-based jobs per
episode, 2 unlockable episodes, tons of new items, an assortment of businesses
to muscle in on, as well as collection sets and achievements. We hope both new
and veteran players will enjoy the expansion as much as we enjoyed creating it."

Yup--I've got it all right here - City and County of San Francisco's official Proclamation, signed and sealed with Mayor Gavin Newsom's John Hancock. I mean, seriously. How cool is this! The Mayor came to Zynga's offices last Friday to let us know how much he appreciates the innovation and job opportunities that Zynga has brought to our community. He had this made up - naming December 2009, Zynga Month in SF!
I particularly like this part:
WHEREAS, Zynga has pioneered the realm of social gaming and
has forever changed the landscape of how games are played; Mark’s contribution
reflects the best of San Francisco by taking new ideas and changing the way we
live; and
WHEREAS, San Francisco is a city of innovators, entrepreneurs, and big thinkers, driven by the ideas of possibility; companies start and grow here because of an entrepreneurial ecosystem that can take ideas to market faster, more effectively, and more successfully than other locations and there is no other company that represents this better than Zynga
Thanks Gavin and the City and County of SF! We love you!

As you may or may not know, Zynga is headquartered in San Francisco's beautiful Potrero Hill neighborhood, and our Cafe World team and Zynga's own Culinary team decided they wanted to do some local real world good with food. The SF Food Bank works to end hunger in SF by providing donated and purchased food to over 400 non-profits enabling
them to give nutritious meals or supplemental groceries to thousands of
low-income families and individuals in the community.
Our teams headed out on Monday to give back to the community and have fun while doign it. The food bank told our food-loving Zynga team that they packed about 11,000 lbs. of carrots and 2,136 lbs. of oats--now that's some serious poundage!
Below is a picture they took right outside where all the fun and hard work took place. Thanks Cafe World and Culinary Team for representing Zynga for an awesome cause and contribution!

Yes, Zynga is very dog-friendly. In fact, we have anywhere between 4-15 dogs running around the office on any given day. To show you just how much man's best friend means to some of us, here's a pic of Alex S. giving Maal some doggie love. Not sure who's going to be covered in more slobber...

Here's a post on the Mother Nature Network from Karl Burkhart saying "Farmville proves that
digital goods could well be the most powerful tool for nonprofit funding" Thanks Karl--how very visionary your pronouncement was a few years ago. I hope you see more and more of this come to fruition very soon--not only with Zynga, but with other players in the space as well.
A few years ago I made a pronouncement on a social media panel that digital goods would redefine the way we do charitable giving online. Needless to say, there were snickers. After all, how could "throwing a beer" at someone or giving someone a "fluffy kitty" for their birthday really amount to anything, especially at a $1 price point. But now thanks to Zynga I can safely say my pronouncement has been confirmed. After writing the article last month on digital farming, I checked in with Farmville creator Mark Pincus and he stated that to date virtual farmers had purchased $700,000 worth of "Sweet Corn" seeds, the proceeds of which go to feed children in poverty-stricken Haiti.
As someone who helps nonprofits create online funding campaigns, this is a Moses-parting-the-seas kind of success which just a year ago would have been almost impossible to imagine. It will be interesting to see where Zynga goes from here. There is no doubt a new philanthropic wellspring has been located! If you haven't purchased your sweet corn yet, today is the last day. Thanks to Laura Hartman who is on site and helping Zynga accomplish our goals with Zynga.org, we're able to actually see how your Sweet Seeds donations are helping the greater good. We're on track for meals to be served to the kids in this community in January.
Our second campaign is running right now, where you can purchase more Sweet Seeds--Sweet Corn, in fact.
Thanks to everyone for making this happen! The Sweet kids of Haiti are so thankful!

You can read about it here. Good stuff!

What's also great about this group of FarmVille farmers/friends, is that they live in different places around the world. Maria is from Bahrain, Lily is from Greece, and the rest of their friends are from the U.S., Canada, Germany, Philippines, New Zealand and Oman. Now if that doesn't show you how Zynga is is truly connecting the world through games, I don't know what would.
Happy Birthday Lily and thanks to Maria for sharing. Love it!
